TYLIE MALIBU
With an eye for beautiful materials and laidback styling, Los Angeles designer Lisa Popp took inspiration from her Malibu childhood to create a brand that embodies an "earthy glam" style and answers the call for bohemian elegance. And so, ten years ago, Tylie Malibu was born. The collection, offering accessories, shoes and clothing, represents effortless beauty and undone glamour. "It’s flirty and restrained, carefree and mysterious, but most importantly it’s wearable," notes Popp. Incorporating a variety of fine fabrications, unique hardware and buttery soft leathers, Tylie Malibu appeals to the youthful minded woman with a penchant for contradiction.
In 2001 the brand gained popularity with the introduction of unstructured bags and studded details, each hand crafted in Tylie Malibu’s Santa Monica design studio. "You have to mix high and low," says Popp. "Contradiction is the edge that has always been so much a part of my personal style," It is this concept of contradiction that has continually inspired and driven the line.
Ten years and 400 retailers later, Popp continues to instill that same design philosophy in to each Tylie Malibu collection. Pre-Fall 2011 Seekers and Wanderers expands on the Gypsy-Jet Set theme of from fall. A luxe nomadic lifestyle inspiring women to have sun kissed cheeks, exquisite style, and a fully stamped passport. "By mixing amazing leathers and python prints with eclectic hardware, fringe, tassels, foxtails and sabers we are able to achieve the layers of a well traveled bag." Think the Beatles in India, the iconic style of Talitha Getty on a roof top in Morocco or the unconventional path of the Beatniks who inspired our Merry Prankster Collection of bags to take "On the Road." Ethnic Ikat patterns and one of a kind vintage hand embroidered fabrics pieced together in the in the traditional tribal fashion continue to draw us down the unbeaten path in style.
The line is about a lifestyle. The idea that you can blend and layer lots textures and styles "It’s very complicated yet easy at the same time with sophisticated materials and colors that bring it all together," says Popp. Amongst her favorites are this spring’s Prana collection of bags and clutches. "I love that each piece of fabric carries its own rich history repurposed into contemporary accessories." Already spotted on the arms of celebrities and tastemakers the Prana is sure to be an editor favorite.
