TYLIE MALIBU
With an eye for beautiful materials and tailoring, Los Angeles designer Lisa Popp took inspiration from her Malibu childhood to create a brand that embodies an “earthy glam” style and answers the call for bohemian elegance. And so, ten years ago, Tylie Malibu was born. The collection, offering accessories, shoes and clothing, represents effortless beauty and undone glamour. “It’s flirty and restrained, carefree and mysterious, but most importantly it’s wearable,” notes Popp. Incorporating a variety of fine fabrications, dreamy cotton and buttery soft leathers, Tylie Malibu appeals to the youthful minded woman with a penchant for contradiction.
In 2001 the brand gained popularity with the introduction of unstructured bags and studded details, each hand crafted in Tylie Malibu’s Santa Monica design studio. “I love to mix high and low,” says Popp. “Contradiction is the edge that has always been so much a part of my personal style,” It is this concept of contradiction that has continually inspired the line.
Ten years and 500 retailers later, Popp continues to instill that same design philosophy in to each Tylie Malibu creation. The spring 2010 line, a sort of “Gypsy Jet Set” theme, as Popp describes it, mixes amazing leathers and python with eclectic hardware. The line is about a lifestyle. The idea that you can blend and layer a lot of pieces - jeans with a tank and a crop tee, a lightweight scarf and maybe a vest and long necklaces with a cross body bag. “It’s very complicated yet easy at the same time with sophisticated materials and colors that bring it all together,” says Popp.
Amongst her favorites are, in Popps words, “the entire gypsy collection!” and new shapes in the Runaway collection such as the “perfect throw everything in” drawstring Samantha and the “night out with girlfriends” Simone. This season’s eclectic hardware, chunky pyramid studs, exposed zippers, and luscious leathers make the new Fall 2010 collection essential to the brands signature style but doesn’t stray too far from that bohemian beach girl for which the line was made. The Tylie Malibu collection can be found in their Malibu flagship location, 500 boutiques and retailers nationwide and online.
